If you require a UKVI approved IELTS certificate for your Tier 4 visa application, it is extremely important that you explicitly advise the test centre of this as your certificate needs to state your UKVI reference number.
If you do not have a UKVI approved IELTS certificate but do not have any English language conditions to meet as part of your offer of a place, your subsequent CAS will state that you meet our English language requirements, as UKVI guidelines allow Universities to use their own methods of assessment in exceptional circumstances.
If you are using your English Language Test for entry onto one of our Pre-Sessional English Language courses, you will need to take a UKVI-approved IELTS only. Some frequently asked questions and answers are detailed below for your assistance:
- I have been accepted for a pre-sessional course but I have another IELTS test scheduled at a non-approved UKVI centre - can I use this to shorten my pre-sessional course length?
No, unfortunately, you cannot. If you are applying to one of our pre-sessional programmes, your IELTS certificate MUST be taken in one of the UKVI-approved IELTS test centres. A full list of approved centres can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/555247/2016-09-23_-_Approved_Secure_English_Language_Tests_and_Test_Centres.pdf
If, however, your new test score is high enough for direct entry onto your degree programme, you will be able to use an IELTS certificate from any test centre.
- I can only get an appointment to take IELTS at a non-approved UKVI centre (because of there being no appointments available/no centres nearby), can I still use this to apply for pre-sessional since I cannot take a UKVI-approved test?
No, unfortunately, you cannot. Your only option will be to obtain an IELTS score high enough for direct entry onto your degree programme. If you are able to meet the language condition set by your department, Durham University will be able to accept an IELTS certificate from any test centre. For pre-sessional entry, all IELTS tests will need to come from an approved centre, details of which can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/555247/2016-09-23_-_Approved_Secure_English_Language_Tests_and_Test_Centres.pdf
- Can I receive a CAS which covers a pre-sessional English Language course and my main Masters programme?
This is possible as long as you have met all non-English language conditions detailed on your offer letter for your main Masters programme. If this is the case and you have been accepted onto the relevant pre-sessional course, we will be able to issue you with an Integrated Offer and an Integrated CAS for your main Masters programme with the addition of the Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI). You will still be required to successfully complete the English language element of the integrated programme (DALI) in order to progress onto your main Masters programme. The DALI element of the programme will cover the same content as our pre-sessional English language courses. For Integrated Offers we can use an IELTS from any test centre.
Please see the page 'Pre-Sessional English Language' here for further details regarding our Pre-Sessional English Language courses and DALI
